Rob Payne Teaching Philosophy
Instead of being categorized solely as a “baseball coach”, I categorize my profession as being a “leadership coach”. Jackie Robinson once said, “A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives.” Robinson’s statement is one of the many reasons I chose to invest my life into the game of baseball. It provides me with the opportunity, each day, to help young men, become men. This game is a teaching tool for life outside the field.
Yes, we learn the exterior parts of the game and how to improve them, such as fielding, catching, throwing, hitting, etc In saying that, what this beautiful game teaches us on our interior are lessons such as winning with class, handling failure, respecting others, being truthful, sticking to your values, meaning what you say, each day is an interview, make eye contact, care comes with candor, and the list goes on and on. This is why I am a “leadership coach”, to prepare these young men for their career in baseball, but most importantly, for life.
