Catchers Program


Baseball is a Team game composed of different, individual position groups. Each position requires a precise coordination of different muscle groups along with special skill sets to performance at the highest levels.  Unfortunately, baseball players are some of the most asymmetrical athletes due to genetic handedness.  With this understanding, it is imperative that Baseball performance training becomes more specialized.

Overall, the loading force supplied by the body is broken down by muscle groups

Hips/legs - 500 lbs

Trunk - 300 lbs

Arm/shoulder - 200 lbs

Total force production - 1,000 lbs

Based upon this breakdown, it is very important to address all muscle groups specific to the position.  In addition, we will ensure that all muscle groups are activated to perform in multiple planes and directions.

In a smarter approach to helping a baseball players reach his goals, we will focus on the following:

  • Internal and External Rotator Cuff Exercises
  • Passive Internal and External Rotator Cuff Stretches
  • Shoulder Adduction and Abduction
  • Activation of the Gluteal Muscle Group
  • Rhythmic Stabilization
  • Multi-Planar Hip Mobility/Extension
  • Quadriceps and Hamstring Development
  • Proprioception/Balance
  • Core Stabilization and Rotational Power
  • Flexibility
  • Interval Training
  • Proper Nutrition
  • Active Recovery

To develop a sound training program the following items will be used;

  • Resistance/Crossover and Speed Bands
  • Medicine Balls (4, 6, 8,10,12 lbs)
  • Dumbbells
  • TRX Suspension Trainers
  • Boxes
  • Bosu Balls
  • Short and High Hurdles
  • Speed/Resistance Sleds
  • Foam Rollers

Catchers - Objectives:

  • Gluteus Activation
  • Piriformis elongation
  • Multi-planar hip mobility
  • Hip Flexor elongation
  • Adductor/Abductor symmetry
  • Proprioception/Balance
  • Shoulder Stabilization
  • Power Conversion
  • Lateral Foot Speed/Strength

Common Injuries:

  • Piriformis Syndrome
  • Eversion ankle sprain
  • Strained/Pulled Groin
  • Abdominal strain/tear
  • ACL/MCL/Meniscus damage
